Frequently asked questions

What is consignment management in logistics and what does it involve?icon
Consignment management is the end-to-end process of creating, tracking, documenting, and closing out individual freight shipments — from order placement through consignment record creation, loading, transit tracking, delivery confirmation, and document reconciliation. In Indian road freight, a consignment is associated with specific documentation: a bilty, an e-way bill, a vehicle loading acknowledgement, and proof of delivery. Effective consignment management ensures all documents are correctly generated, associated with the right vehicle and trip, tracked through their validity periods, and archived with delivery confirmation. Without a systematic system, discrepancies between physical goods movement and documentation create compliance risks and billing disputes.
How does Fleetx consignment management work in practice?icon
A consignment is created digitally when a load booking is received, capturing all details: shipper and consignee information, goods description, declared value, addresses, contracted rate, and special handling instructions. Once created, it is assigned to a trip linked to a specific vehicle and driver. The system automatically calculates e-way bill validity and generates it through GST portal integration. During transit, the consignment's status is tracked through GPS position and geofence triggers. The driver captures ePOD at delivery — recipient signature, photos, GPS timestamp — which closes the consignment as delivered and immediately triggers the billing process. All documentation is stored digitally and accessible to authorised parties including the shipper.
How does the system handle multi-consignment trips where one vehicle carries multiple shipments?icon
Fleetx supports multi-consignment trip management by associating multiple consignment records with a single trip, each with its own delivery stop, documentation package, and status tracking. The driver's app shows the delivery sequence with navigation to each stop. Each delivery is captured independently through ePOD — separate signature, photo, and timestamp per recipient. The e-way bill for each consignment is monitored independently, with automated extension triggered for any individual consignment whose bill is approaching expiry before its specific delivery point is reached.
What is a bilty and how does Fleetx help manage bilty documentation?icon
A bilty is the transport receipt document in Indian road freight — functionally equivalent to a bill of lading in maritime shipping. It records consignor and consignee names and addresses, vehicle number and driver details, goods description, quantity, weight, declared value, freight charges, and special instructions. Fleetx digitises bilty creation: when a consignment is created in the system, bilty details are entered digitally and the system generates a printable bilty in the standard format. This replaces manual carbon-copy bilty books and ensures bilty details are directly linked to trip and GPS tracking data, so any query about a specific bilty can be resolved by looking up the consignment record in the system.
How does automated e-way bill management reduce compliance risk?icon
E-way bill compliance risk arises primarily from bill expiry. Validity is calculated from trip distance — typically one day per 200 kilometres — and expired bills at checkpoints can result in vehicle detention and fines. For a transporter managing dozens of simultaneous active trips at different stages of validity, manually monitoring and extending bills is practically impossible. Fleetx automates this by continuously comparing each active bill's remaining validity against the vehicle's GPS position and estimated arrival time using actual road network distance remaining. When a bill is at risk of expiring before delivery, the system automatically triggers an extension request through the GST portal, removing the monitoring burden from the operations team entirely.
Can shippers track their consignments through Fleetx?icon
Yes. Fleetx provides a shipper-facing consignment tracking portal — branded with the transporter's or logistics company's identity — where shippers see the current GPS location of their consignment, estimated time of arrival based on current position and traffic, status at each milestone (picked up, in transit, at delivery, delivered), and ePOD documentation once delivery is confirmed. Shippers can receive automated SMS or email notifications at key milestones — when consignment is loaded and dispatched, when it arrives at the delivery city, and when delivery is confirmed. This reduces tracking calls to transporters, freeing up operations staff time while improving the shipper's experience.
