Frequently asked questions

What is vehicle telematics and what data does it capture?icon
Vehicle telematics collects, transmits, and analyses data from vehicles using GPS receivers, onboard sensors, and cellular communications. A telematics device captures GPS location, speed, and movement; engine data from the OBD port (RPM, coolant temperature, battery voltage, engine fault codes, total engine hours); driver behaviour events through accelerometer sensors (harsh braking, acceleration, cornering, overspeeding); and additional sensor data (fuel level, temperature, door sensors). This combined data stream is transmitted to the cloud in near real time, creating a continuous objective record of what every vehicle is doing, how it is being driven, its mechanical condition, and whether operational policies are being followed.
How does vehicle telematics help reduce fleet maintenance costs?icon
Telematics enables preventive maintenance by triggering service intervals from GPS-tracked odometer milestones rather than calendar dates, ensuring services happen when the vehicle actually needs them. Engine fault code monitoring detects early warning signs — overheating trends, abnormal oil pressure, developing injector issues — before they become full failures, allowing planned workshop scheduling rather than roadside breakdown. Reactive maintenance typically costs three to five times more than preventive maintenance, and generates additional costs from delayed shipments.
What is OBD telematics and which vehicles support it?icon
OBD telematics uses the vehicle's On-Board Diagnostics port to read engine parameters, fault codes, fuel consumption, and other vehicle system data directly from the engine control unit. Most commercial vehicles manufactured after 2010 have an OBD port with standardised digital access, making OBD telematics simpler and often less expensive than fitting separate sensors. However, OBD telematics suits lighter commercial vehicles and newer trucks with modern electronic engine management. Older trucks and some models have limited OBD data or proprietary protocols, requiring standalone telematics devices with separate sensors instead. Fleetx supports both approaches.
How does vehicle telematics data improve driver training and performance?icon
Telematics provides objective, granular data for effective driver training: every overspeeding incident with location and duration, every harsh braking event with GPS context, every harsh acceleration event with road conditions. This enables coaching conversations that are specific and evidence-based — a manager can show a driver exactly which incidents occurred, where, and how often, and track improvement in subsequent trips after coaching. Driver scorecards allow fair fleet-wide comparison and create healthy competitive dynamics when used for performance recognition programmes.
What is the difference between vehicle telematics and video telematics?icon
Vehicle telematics captures data from sensors and the vehicle's own systems — GPS, speed, engine parameters, accelerometer-based driving events, and fuel data — answering what happened (how fast, how hard, how much fuel, when, where). Video telematics adds cameras to capture the visual context — a forward-facing road camera shows what was on the road during a harsh braking event; an interior driver-facing camera shows whether the driver was looking at the road, using a phone, or showing drowsiness. The two are complementary: telematics for systematic quantified performance data; video telematics for visual evidence and AI-powered real-time safety intervention.
How secure is vehicle telematics data and who has access to it?icon
Telematics data is transmitted over encrypted cellular connections and stored in cloud infrastructure with role-based access controls. In Fleetx, fleet managers and designated staff access all vehicle and driver data; drivers see their own trip data and scorecards through the driver app; customers or shippers may be given limited access to consignment-level tracking data only if the fleet operator enables this. Data retention and deletion policies are configurable. For driver data specifically, Indian data protection principles require that drivers be informed about what data is collected and how it is used — supported through consent documentation during driver onboarding.
